Ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized ovum (developing pregnancy) implants in a position other than the cavity of the uterus (womb). The site of implantation is the Fallopian tube in 95% of cases. As the pregnancy grows, the Fallopian tube can rupture causing life threatening internal bleeding.

Once a women has had an ectopic pregnancy, there is a 5-10% chance of a further ectopic in a future pregnancy.
